Why Won’t My AC Cool the Whole House?

ac-with-toolsYou know that your central air conditioning system should cool your entire house, but something feels off. No matter how much you adjust your thermostat, some areas just never seem to cool.

Uneven cooling can be a sign of several problems that warrant air conditioning repair in Clearwater, FL. Working with a technician is the easiest way to get to the bottom of your AC woes; this post will also help you start to identify what could be causing your air conditioning to not effectively cool your home.

1. Your AC is too old.

While they’re built to last, air conditioners still have an expiration date. Most central HVAC systems will last around 12 to 17 years, but some may give out sooner. The older a unit is, the harder it has to work to perform its job.

Old air conditioning units can eventually lose their power, and they just can’t cool a house like they used to. Upgrading to a modern, energy-efficient model can fix the issue and even help you save on cooling costs.

2. Your AC is too small for your house.

An undersized HVAC system will draw a lot of power, but it won’t be able to fully cool your house. You’ll wind up with hot spots, drafts, and uneven temperatures throughout your home. You might need to upgrade your model after having a technician determine the best size for your house’s square footage.

3. The air filter is clogged and needs to be replaced.

Dirty air filters are one of the most common culprits when it comes to air conditioning problems. Luckily, this is also one of the cheapest and easiest fixes. Regularly replacing your air filter every 30 to 90 days can prevent disrupted airflow.

If you aren’t sure how to change your filter, or even what kind you need, consider booking a maintenance call. A technician can tell you what type of filter your system uses and show you how to properly install future replacements.

4. The thermostat needs to be recalibrated.

Sometimes, thermostats becomes miscalibrated, causing temperature control trouble. The location of your thermostat also has a big influence on how your AC performs. If your thermostat is near windows, doors, or a vent, it may not be getting accurate readings.

5. Refrigerant is leaking somewhere in your system.

Refrigerant leaks will limit the amount of cool air your AC produces and distributes. Leaking refrigerant is a hazard to the environment and your health, especially if your unit is several years old and still uses R22.

Some warning signs of a refrigerant leak include:

  • Air feels warmer than usual, even set to “cool”
  • Your AC struggles to cool your whole house
  • Short-cycling, or AC running constantly
  • You notice liquid around your outside unit
  • You hear hissing or bubbling during operation

If you suspect that your AC has a refrigerant leak, shut off your system, and call a professional for AC repair.

If you notice any of these potential problems, then it means it is time to talk to a professional about getting your AC assess and fixed.
